뭍에 태어난 아이는

물의 이야기를 선물로 받았다

 

이야기는 방울방울 떨어지다

물줄기가 되어 흐르기 시작했다

 

쏟아지는 이야기를 담으려

가진 종이와 책과 돌을 모두 사용해 밤낮없이 기록했지만

물을 이기지 못한 채 찢기고 녹슬고 마모되었다

 

뭍에 쏟아버린 이야기들을 내내 아쉬워하다

낮은 달이 뜬 어느 여름날 

그림자 없는 짙은 

물로 향했다

 

몇 번의 물보라와 물거품이 지난 후

들숨, 날숨, 큰 들숨 그리고 숨 참기

곯아떨어지듯 나른해진 몸

 

9미터 아래

다시 자유롭고, 상쾌한 몸

아주 자연스럽게

실재하는 모든 것을 받아들인다

 

어느덧 짙은 푸른색 품에 도착하자

물의 이야기들이 새겨진다

 

문장이 단어가 되고

단어는 음절이 되어

모음이 사라지고 자음이 분해되더니

이내 물이 되었다

 

느릿한 말이

한 꺼풀 이야기가

섬광 같은 물길로

 

사슬 없는 지대

무한한 물의 장서

 

소멸하지 않는 것의 시간을 잴 수는 없다

물의 언어에는 먼지도 이끼도 끼지 않는다

 

은빛 물고기와 열매 맺는 해초

모래 알갱이와 부서진 조개껍데기

비릿하고 아늑한 물내음 사이로

 

한 방울의 투명한 물방울은

물길이 되어 영원히 푸른 세계를 유영한다

A child born on land

was given a gift: the tale of water.

 

The tale fell in drops,

then gathered as a stream and ran.

 

To hold the rain of words,

she was offered paper, books, and stone

writing without rest, day into night

but none could endure the water.

Pages tore, ink bled, stone wore thin.

One summer night beneath a low moon,

grieving the stories spilled on land in vein,

she turned toward the dark, shadowless water.

 

Spray, foam

inhale, exhale, one deep breath, then holding

the body drifted, slack with sleep.

 

Six feet down,

the body grew free again, refreshed,

welcoming without resistance

all that is real.

 

In the deep blue’s embrace

the tales of water carved themselves.

 

Sentences broke into words,

words into syllables,

vowels dissolved, consonants scattered

all becoming water.

 

A slow phrase,

a thin skin of story,

flared into a shining current.

No chains there.

Just an infinite library of water.

 

What endures cannot be measured by time.

The language of water gathers

no dust, no moss.

 

A silver fish, a fruiting kelp,

grain of sand, shattered shell—

through the briny, homely scent of water,

 

A single drop, transparent,

becomes a current,

floating forever in the endless blue.

The literary and visual metaphors of water, which has been circulating throughout the artist’s works, flow in and out of the painting and weave the narrative between the ephemeral and the eternal.

 

The poem written by the artist in the previous page introduces the protagonist in the artist’s world who is born of land but was gifted the story of water at birth. As the protagonist tries to write down the story of water, all the vessels of text that exist on land (paper, stones, scrolls) are torn, rusted, and worn. 

 

In Blue’s world where it symbolises land as mortal and sea as immortal, the ephemeral being pours out stories into the deep blue water, the eternal carrier of narrative.

 

The story of the mortal is eternally inscribed in a fluid vessel of text that does not tear, rust, or wear. Just as transparent water droplets gather to form a blue sea, her works shed light on the moment of epiphany where the mortals take a glimpse of perpetuality. 

 

#Work 1: Water-bound Verses (Painting)

This painting seeks to hold the moment when the world of water—etched between the eternal rise and fall of the tide—folds back into itself, becoming whole. Symbols in my other works, such as dolphin, water snake, seaweed gather here, flowing and weaving a narrative.

 

#Work 2: For the Weary Minds (Painting)

The sea—cold yet warm, abundant yet simple, flexible yet steadfast—becomes the stage for narrative of Blue’s works. In a worldview where land is mortal and water eternal, new symbols emerge: dolphins for freedom and ideals, water snakes for instinctual desire, the moon for cyclical time, books for the will toward eternity. In this painting, seashells are studied which are symbols of birth and gift in Blue’s works

 

 

#Work 3: The Book (Painting)

The series ‘Vessels of Text’ arises from a literary question: What vessel could carry an eternal story? This painting is one of the triptyque which consists of ‘The Book’, ‘The Scroll’, and ‘The Stone’. First conceived during the solo exhibition ‘What Is After a Long Blue Night?’ in the UK, these works inhabit are transitional pieces that are in search of answers to the question once posed. Scrolls, books, and stones become recurring motifs, each a metaphor for the fragile yet enduring forms of stories. Through them, the paintings imagine a vessel that resists fracture, fire, and erosion—an unyielding cradle for stories that seek to have a glipmse on eternity.

 

#Work 4: Vessel of Text I, II, III, IV (Etching)

This etching print is a continued research on the same question posed to the third work submitted, “The Book”. While the painting series explored the vessel of narrative itself, the prints gave form to the images contained within each vessel. The print contains four different etched plates made with hard ground.

 

#Work 5: Epiphany IV (Etching)

‘Epiphany’ denotes a sudden moment of revelation—an instant when perception shifts and clarity emerges.  ‘Epiphany V’ is one of the Epiphany series which is comprised of five etchings. The print captures the threshold where two worlds converge: land, envisioned as the realm of mortality, and water, imagined as the realm of eternity. Through this meeting point, the works explore the fragile yet profound passage between the finite and the infinite.
